Stump Grinding and Removal Services in Rhode Island

AllScapes provides professional stump grinding and more extensive stump removal for Rhode Island homes, businesses, and project sites. We help property owners reclaim areas affected by recently cut trees and older stumps that interfere with mowing, landscaping, construction, or everyday use.

Our team evaluates the stump, intended use of the area, equipment access, and nearby property features before recommending an approach. Request a free on-site estimate or call to discuss your project.

Reclaim Space After Tree Removal

A remaining stump can become a trip hazard, complicate lawn care, limit new planting, or stand in the way of a larger property improvement. Decaying wood and exposed root flares may also attract insects or support fungal activity. The appropriate solution depends on what you want to do with the area afterward.

Stump grinding is suitable for many lawns and routine landscape projects because it removes the visible stump below grade while leaving most roots underground. Full stump removal involves more extensive excavation and may be appropriate when the root area conflicts with construction, utilities, drainage, excavation, or a significant redesign.

If the stump is part of a broader tree or property project, explore all Rhode Island tree services or ask AllScapes to coordinate the related work in one estimate.

Stump Grinding or Full Stump Removal?

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe different scopes of work. AllScapes can evaluate the site and explain which option fits your plans.

Stump Grinding

  • Removal: The visible stump is ground below grade using a stump grinder.
  • Disturbance: Usually lower because most roots remain underground.
  • Typical use: Lawns, routine landscaping, trip-hazard reduction, and reclaiming yard space.
  • Restoration: Chips are handled as agreed and the depression can be backfilled.

More Extensive Stump Removal

  • Removal: The stump and a substantial portion of its main root mass are excavated; fine roots may remain.
  • Disturbance: Greater because a backhoe or excavator creates a larger opening.
  • Typical use: Construction, utilities, hardscaping, major grading, or substantial redesign.
  • Restoration: The excavation normally requires backfilling and grading.

The intended use of the area is the most important distinction. Grinding may be sufficient for grass or general landscaping, while excavation may be necessary when future work needs access to the root zone.

When Stump Work Can Improve a Property

Property owners commonly request stump service to:

  • Reduce a visible obstacle or trip hazard
  • Make mowing and routine landscape maintenance easier
  • Reclaim space for lawn, planting beds, patios, walkways, or other improvements
  • Address stumps left after tree removal
  • Prepare for grading, excavation, utilities, or construction

Professional Stump Grinding

AllScapes uses commercial stump-grinding equipment. We consider stump diameter, root flare, nearby structures, access, terrain, and the desired finished grade. Grinding depth is selected for the intended use and site conditions.

Grinding produces wood chips mixed with soil. The grindings may be left, used as initial backfill, or removed as agreed. Grass or replacement planting may require additional soil preparation.

Stump and Root-Mass Excavation

When a project needs more extensive access below grade, AllScapes can use excavation equipment to remove the stump and substantial root material. This may be appropriate for additions, driveways, hardscaping, utilities, drainage, or grading.

Backfilling, grading, seeding, and site preparation can be defined in the estimate. For a broader project, start with our land clearing and site-work services.

Our Stump Grinding and Removal Process

1. Evaluate the Stump and Surroundings

We review stump size, visible roots, access, terrain, nearby property features, and the planned use of the area. Utility considerations are addressed where applicable.

2. Select and Position the Equipment

The crew prepares the work area and positions equipment to help limit unnecessary disturbance.

3. Grind or Excavate the Stump

The stump is ground to the agreed depth or excavated with the root material identified in the estimate.

4. Handle Chips and Debris

Chips may be removed, retained, or used as initial backfill. Excavated material is handled as described in the estimate.

5. Backfill and Prepare the Area

The area is backfilled and graded according to the scope. Seeding or preparation for another improvement can also be included.

Equipment and Planning for Difficult Access

Fences, patios, stone walls, septic components, utilities, and established plantings can affect equipment selection and access.

With more than 25 years in business, AllScapes has worked on compact residential lots, commercial sites, wooded properties, and landscaped grounds. We assess the route before confirming equipment access and explain relevant limitations.

If nearby trees show similar decline, decay, or pest symptoms, a licensed arborist evaluation may be useful. Stump grinding is not treatment for other trees.

What Affects Stump Grinding and Removal Cost?

The cost depends on the stump, the site, and the finished condition required. Important factors include:

  • Stump diameter and the size of the root flare
  • The number of stumps included in the visit
  • Tree species, age, condition, and wood density
  • Large surface roots or root material extending into the work area
  • Access width and the route available for equipment
  • Proximity to buildings, fences, patios, walls, utilities, and hardscaping
  • Terrain, slopes, soil conditions, and sensitive landscape areas
  • The grinding depth needed for the intended use
  • Whether chips and debris are removed or retained
  • Backfilling, grading, seeding, or other restoration included in the scope
  • Whether the project requires grinding or more extensive excavation

Generic national price ranges do not account for these property-specific conditions. An on-site assessment is the most reliable way to determine the appropriate service and provide an estimate.

Stump Services Across Rhode Island

From its Exeter office, AllScapes serves properties across Rhode Island. Sites in East Greenwich, Warwick, and North Kingstown range from compact landscaped lots to wooded properties. Coastal communities such as Narragansett and Westerly and Watch Hill may add considerations involving storm damage, soil, hardscaping, and access.

We evaluate each property on its actual conditions. Location names alone do not determine the method, equipment, or price.

We are so very impressed with this company. This is the second large tree removal job that we had accomplished with them. They are great to work with very prompt and timely as as well as as professional in their overall approach to the business. The guys that do the work on cutting down, the trees are amazing. The equipment they use is top-notch and really provides them an opportunity to do the work without causing on due damage to your lawn, etc.. We would definitely use them again and would encourage everybody else in the Service area to do so. Can’t say enough good things about them

We had a large tree limb snap and it was dangling precariously by the road in front of our house. When I explained the situation to Sean, he had his crew come out the same day to take care of it. This is my 2nd time using AllScapes for tree services, and both times I've been very impressed with their knowledge of trees and the quality of their work (safety, clean up, etc). I'm especially grateful this time because they quickly addressed a potentially dangerous situation, to help keep my family and my neighbors safe. Thanks AllScapes!

I was worried about an old tree in the back yard that had become diseased and was dropping branches. It hung over the yard and the house. I asked Allscapes if they could take it down and grind the stump before a 4th of July cookout and they were able to make time for us. The guys were careful, methodical, and respectful of property. While there they trimmed some out of control hedges (they look fantastic), pulled out two dying holly bushes and ground another older stump. Oh and trimmed some dead branches from a couple trees near the road. Add a reasonable price and we were very happy with the service. Highly recommend.

A large portion of my mature Maple tree came down in my yard. Further, the remaining portion of the damaged tree also needed to be removed. Compounding the problem, there was not direct vehicle access to the tree. Allscapes Tree Service viewed my difficult situation the same day that I called determining that they could extract the tree over a 6' stockade fence via an access road. Upon receiving RI Energy's permission to use their access road, Allscapes Tree Service arrived the following day removing the downed limb as well as the tree. Start to finish, Allscapes staff and workers were 'extremely ' helpful, professional and courteous. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up my yard as well as the access road. Their attention to detail is excellent and I will definitely call them in the future!!

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Grinding reduces the stump below grade while most roots remain. More extensive removal excavates the stump and substantial root material, creating a larger area to restore.

Depth depends on the stump, access, site conditions, and intended use. AllScapes defines the intended result during the estimate.

Grinding does not eliminate every living root. Some species can produce shoots, so new growth may need to be monitored.

Most roots remain underground and gradually break down. Timing varies with species, root size, soil, and moisture.

Often, but the area normally needs appropriate backfill and soil preparation because woody grindings can settle.

Possibly, but remaining roots, wood debris, soil, drainage, and the original removal reason matter. A nearby location or additional preparation may be recommended. Learn about tree transplanting and installation.

They may be removed, retained as mulch, or used as initial backfill. Confirm the preferred handling during the estimate.

Sometimes. Access, clearances, and underground conditions must be evaluated. Utility location and other precautions may be required.

Yes. Identify every stump during the estimate so equipment, time, debris handling, and restoration can be planned.

Not automatically. They are separate unless the estimate includes both. Ask for them to be itemized together and review AllScapes tree removal.
